Published: 10/22/2026 (10/22/2026, 19:13:55 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: bytecodealliance
Product: wasmtime

Description

CVE-2026-115389 is a resource allocation vulnerability in bytecodealliance's wasmtime affecting versions before 36.0.16, between 37.0.0 and before 48.0.3, and between 49.0.0 and before 49.0.1. The issue arises because wasmtime does not properly account for host memory allocations when lifting guest values via the Val API, allowing a malicious WebAssembly guest to allocate significantly more host memory than tracked. This can lead to denial of service due to resource exhaustion. The vulnerability has a low severity rating and no known exploits in the wild. No patch links are provided in the input data.

Technical Analysis

Wasmtime versions prior to 36.0.16, between 37.0.0 and 48.0.3, and between 49.0.0 and 49.0.1 do not correctly track host memory allocations when lifting guest values through the dynamically-typed Val API. This bypasses the hostcall fuel limit, enabling a malicious WebAssembly guest to return crafted values that allocate approximately 100 times more host memory than accounted for. This discrepancy can cause denial of service by exhausting host resources.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows a malicious WebAssembly guest to cause denial of service by allocating excessive host memory beyond the tracked limits. This can degrade or disrupt the availability of the affected system. There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity impact. No known exploits are reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is confirmed, consider restricting or sandboxing untrusted WebAssembly guests to limit potential resource abuse.
