Vendor/Project: tokio-rs
Product: tokio

Description

A race condition vulnerability (CWE-362) exists in tokio-rs tokio version 1.54.0 involving improper synchronization between tokio::time::Interval::poll_tick and the multi-threaded runtime's time driver. This can cause use-after-free issues leading to assertion panics, task reference-count corruption, or heap memory corruption. The issue is fixed in version 1.54.1.

Technical Analysis

In tokio-rs tokio version 1.54.0, a race condition occurs between the poll_tick method of tokio::time::Interval (including .tick().await) and the multi-threaded runtime's time driver. This race condition can cause an internal timer entry to be dropped without proper synchronization with the driver thread firing it, resulting in a use-after-free on the timer's waker and task state. The unsafe condition can lead to assertion panics, corruption of task reference counts, or heap memory corruption. The vulnerability is addressed and fixed in version 1.54.1.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this race condition can cause runtime panics, corruption of task reference counts, or heap memory corruption, potentially destabilizing applications using tokio 1.54.0. The CVSS 4.0 score is 5.8 (medium severity), reflecting the complexity and limited attack vector (local access with privileged requirements). No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade tokio to version 1.54.1 or later where this race condition vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated or required.
