Published: 10/23/2026 (10/23/2026, 11:36:47 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: VideoLAN
Product: VLC for Android

Description

VLC for Android versions before 3.7.2 have a confused-deputy vulnerability in the FileUtils.getUri() function. This flaw allows a co-installed app without permissions to exploit VLC's trust in certain content URI authorities and cause VLC to overwrite files in the shared Download directory. The vulnerability requires VLC to have All files access and can lead to overwriting other apps' files. The issue is addressed in VLC for Android version 3.7.2.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-115724 describes a confused-deputy file overwrite vulnerability in VLC for Android prior to version 3.7.2. The vulnerability arises because FileUtils.getUri() trusts content URIs based solely on the com.fsck.k9.attachmentprovider or gmail-ls authority. A malicious co-installed app, even without permissions, can declare these authorities and send a crafted VIEW intent to VLC's exported StartActivity. This causes VLC, when holding All files access, to write attacker-chosen content under an attacker-chosen filename in the shared Download directory, potentially overwriting files belonging to other apps.

Potential Impact

An attacker can overwrite arbitrary files in the shared Download directory by exploiting VLC's trust in certain content URI authorities. This can lead to data loss or interference with other apps' files. The vulnerability requires VLC to have All files access and a co-installed malicious app to send crafted intents. The CVSS score is low (2.1), indicating limited impact and exploitability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade VLC for Android to version 3.7.2 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated. Patch status is confirmed by the affectedVersions field indicating versions before 3.7.2 are vulnerable.
