Technical Analysis

MongoDB Compass uses Electron, which maintains its own TLS root certificate store. This store included recoverable eMudhra intermediate CA certificates, leading to improper certificate validation (CWE-295). This vulnerability could allow attackers to exploit the certificate validation weakness. The issue is fixed in MongoDB Compass 1.53.1, which upgrades Electron to version 44.9.1, removing or mitigating the problematic certificates.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability impacts the trustworthiness of TLS connections established by MongoDB Compass, potentially allowing attackers to bypass certificate validation protections. This could lead to man-in-the-middle attacks or interception of sensitive data transmitted by the application. The CVSS 4.0 base score of 7.6 indicates a high severity with network attack vector, high impact on confidentiality and integrity, and requiring user interaction and partial attack complexity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should update MongoDB Compass to version 1.53.1 or later, which includes Electron 44.9.1 and resolves the improper certificate validation issue. No other mitigations are indicated or required once the update is applied.
