AI-suggested
A fix is available in parse-server versions 8.6.104 and 9.10.5-alpha.5 and later. Users should upgrade to these or later versions to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
Parse Server versions before 8.6.104 and versions from 9.0.0 up to but not including 9.10.5-alpha.5 have an improper privilege management vulnerability. When issuing an SMS multi-factor authentication verification code, the server saves the entire login request with master privileges. This allows an SMS MFA-enrolled user to modify master-key-restricted fields on their own account, such as the email-verification flag or values protected by beforeSave triggers.
Impact
An attacker with SMS MFA enrollment can modify sensitive account fields that should be protected by master key restrictions. This could undermine account integrity by changing verification flags or other protected attributes, potentially affecting authentication and authorization logic. The CVSS score of 2.1 indicates low severity, reflecting the limited scope and required privileges for exploitation.
Summary
CVE-2026-116162 describes a privilege escalation vulnerability in parse-community's parse-server. Specifically, in versions prior to 8.6.104 and between 9.0.0 and 9.10.5-alpha.5, the server improperly saves the entire login request with master privileges during SMS MFA verification. This flaw enables an attacker who is enrolled in SMS MFA to include additional fields in the login request that can alter master-key-restricted fields on their own account, potentially bypassing intended restrictions such as email verification status or beforeSave-protected data.
