Users should review their Data App configurations to ensure that write transactions are not enabled for Subscriber-level or anonymous users unless absolutely necessary. Restrict REST API authorization settings to prevent anonymous write access. Monitor vendor advisories for official fixes and apply them once available. Until a fix is released, avoid publishing Data Apps that allow write operations to untrusted users.
Description
The WP Data Access – App Builder for Tables, Forms, Dashboards, Charts & Maps WordPress plugin up to version 5.5.89 contains an incorrect authorization vulnerability. Authenticated users with Subscriber-level access or higher can exploit this flaw to write to arbitrary database rows and columns, bypassing configured restrictions. This includes the ability to overwrite the administrator's password hash, enabling full site takeover. Exploitation requires that an administrator has published a Data App allowing write transactions for Subscriber-level or anonymous users. Unauthenticated exploitation is possible only if the Data App is configured with anonymous REST API authorization and write permissions. The vulnerability arises because write endpoints do not enforce the same row-filter and column allow-list restrictions as read endpoints.
