Published: 07/22/2026 (07/22/2026, 19:22:05 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: MongoDB
Product: MongoDB Server

Description

An issue in the server’s Atlas Search integration allows an authenticated user to bypass per-user access controls. In sharded topologies, the $search and $searchMeta aggregation stages use internal routing that is normally populated only by the trusted router during sharded search planning. Due to insufficient input validation, an authenticated client can supply these fields directly.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability arises from improper input validation (CWE-20) in MongoDB Server's Atlas Search integration within sharded cluster environments. The $search and $searchMeta aggregation stages rely on internal routing information normally populated by a trusted router. However, an authenticated user can directly supply these routing fields, bypassing per-user access controls. This flaw affects MongoDB Server versions 8.0, 8.2.0, and 8.3.0. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 6.0, indicating medium severity. No official patch or remediation level has been published at this time, and no known exploits are reported in the wild.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user can bypass per-user access controls in MongoDB Server's Atlas Search feature on sharded topologies. This could allow unauthorized access to data or search results that should be restricted based on user permissions. The impact is limited to authenticated users and does not involve privilege escalation or remote code execution. The vulnerability affects the integrity of access control enforcement in the Atlas Search aggregation stages.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, restrict access to trusted authenticated users only and monitor for unusual usage of $search and $searchMeta aggregation stages in sharded environments. Avoid exposing Atlas Search functionality to untrusted users. Follow MongoDB's official advisories for updates on patches or temporary mitigations.
