Published: 07/20/2026 (07/20/2026, 12:12:06 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10

Description

A denial-of-service and resource exhaustion vulnerability exists within the `GDBus` component of GLib. The `gdbusauth` authentication mechanism fails to enforce proper length limitations on data lines read from a client. An unauthenticated local or remote attacker can exploit this lack of input validation by sending excessively long streams of data, causing the application to consume massive amounts of system memory and CPU, potentially leading to a crash or system hang.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves the allocation of resources without limits or throttling in the GDBus component of GLib used by Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. Specifically, the gdbusauth authentication mechanism fails to validate the length of data lines read from clients. An attacker, either local or remote and unauthenticated, can exploit this by sending overly long data streams, causing excessive consumption of system memory and CPU resources. This may lead to denial-of-service conditions such as application crashes or system hangs. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 5.3, reflecting medium severity with local attack vector, low complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, and impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in denial-of-service through resource exhaustion, causing the affected application or system to crash or hang due to excessive memory and CPU consumption. There is limited impact on confidentiality and integrity as per the CVSS vector, but availability is notably affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-15588 for current remediation guidance. No official fix or workaround is stated in the provided data. Until a patch is available, consider restricting access to the vulnerable service to trusted users and monitoring for unusual resource usage patterns related to gdbusauth.
