Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-15687 describes a path traversal vulnerability in the Kubernetes Java client library where a compromised pod can exploit the copyDirectoryFromPod function to write files outside the intended directory on the client machine if enableTarCompressing is disabled. This improper limitation of pathname to a restricted directory could lead to unauthorized file creation. The vulnerability affects versions =10.0.0, >=10.0.0 <25.0.1, and =26.0.0 of the kubernetes-client/java library. The CVSS 3.0 score is 2.7, indicating low severity, with the attack vector being network, requiring high privileges and user interaction, and impacting integrity with no confidentiality or availability impact.

Potential Impact

An attacker controlling a pod with sufficient privileges can cause the client machine running the Kubernetes Java client to create files in arbitrary locations, potentially leading to limited integrity violations. There is no impact on confidentiality or availability according to the CVSS vector. The overall impact is low severity.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation level has been published yet for this vulnerability. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid disabling the enableTarCompressing option when using copyDirectoryFromPod or restrict usage to trusted pods. Monitor vendor advisories for updates.
