Source: CVE Database V5
Product: Simple Membership

Description

The Simple Membership WordPress plugin before 4.7.8 does not verify whether user creation failed during registration before using the returned value as a user ID to update an account, allowing unauthenticated attackers to overwrite the primary administrator's account data (including the email address) and take over that account through the password reset flow.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-15930 is a missing authorization vulnerability (CWE-862) in the Simple Membership WordPress plugin versions prior to 4.7.8. The plugin fails to verify whether user creation failed during registration before using the returned value as a user ID to update an account. This allows unauthenticated attackers to overwrite the primary administrator's account data, such as the email address, enabling account takeover through the password reset flow.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can overwrite the primary administrator's account details, including the email address, which can lead to full administrative account takeover via the password reset mechanism. This compromises the integrity and control of the affected WordPress site.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Since no official fix or patch link is provided, users should monitor the vendor's announcements and update to version 4.7.8 or later once available. Until then, restrict registration capabilities or implement additional access controls to mitigate exploitation risk.
