Description

CVE-2026-16005 is a medium severity vulnerability in the ASUS Armoury Crate driver involving the release of an invalid pointer or reference. A local user can exploit this flaw by sending a crafted IOCTL request that bypasses the driver's verification, leading to arbitrary memory being freed. This can corrupt data structures and cause a system crash (BSOD). No patch or official remediation information is currently available.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CWE-763) in the Armoury Crate driver allows a local attacker to free arbitrary memory by crafting a specific IOCTL request that circumvents the driver's verification mechanisms. The improper release of invalid pointers can corrupt kernel data structures, resulting in a system crash (blue screen of death). The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.8, reflecting medium severity with local attack vector, high attack complexity, and no user interaction required. There is no known exploit in the wild and no vendor advisory or patch information provided yet.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can cause data structure corruption and a system crash (BSOD), leading to denial of service on affected systems. The vulnerability requires local access and has high attack complexity, limiting the ease of exploitation.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the ASUS Security Advisory for Armoury Crate for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, limit local access to trusted users and monitor for updates from ASUS.
