Vendor/Project: MikroTik
Product: RouterOS

Description

MikroTik RouterOS has a vulnerability in its API authentication that does not effectively restrict excessive login attempts. The system lacks meaningful rate-limiting, account lockout, or source-based restrictions, allowing attackers to perform repeated authentication attempts. Although some versions implement a fixed delay per connection, this can be bypassed using concurrent sessions, enabling high-volume attempts. This weakness could allow attackers to eventually obtain valid credentials and gain unauthorized administrative access.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-16347 describes a weakness in MikroTik RouterOS API authentication handling where excessive authentication attempts are not properly restricted. The system fails to enforce effective rate-limiting, account lockout, or source-based restrictions, permitting repeated failed login attempts without significant defensive measures. While some versions apply a fixed delay per connection, attackers can bypass this by opening multiple concurrent sessions, maintaining a high volume of authentication attempts. This vulnerability increases the risk of credential compromise and unauthorized administrative access.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows attackers to perform brute-force or credential-stuffing attacks against MikroTik RouterOS API authentication without effective rate-limiting or lockout mechanisms. Successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized administrative access, resulting in full compromise of the affected device's confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, administrators should consider implementing external mitigations such as network-level rate limiting, restricting API access to trusted sources, or using VPNs to limit exposure. Monitor vendor communications for updates on patches or official mitigations.
