Vendor/Project: Mozilla
Product: Firefox

Description

Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 152. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability was fixed in Firefox 153 and Thunderbird 153.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-16411 encompasses a set of memory safety bugs in Mozilla Firefox before version 153. These bugs include use-after-free, integer overflows, incorrect boundary conditions, JIT miscompilations, sandbox escapes, privilege escalations, and information disclosures across multiple components such as DOM, Audio/Video, JavaScript WebAssembly engine, Graphics, and Networking. The vulnerabilities collectively pose a critical risk, with potential for arbitrary code execution if exploited. Mozilla released fixes for these issues in Firefox 153 and Thunderbird 153, as detailed in their security advisories MFSA2026-68 and MFSA2026-71.

Potential Impact

The vulnerabilities can lead to high-impact outcomes including arbitrary code execution, sandbox escapes, privilege escalation, information disclosure, and denial-of-service conditions. The critical CVSS score (9.8) reflects the potential for remote exploitation without user interaction and with low attack complexity. However, no active exploitation has been reported. In Thunderbird, the risk is generally lower due to disabled scripting in email contexts, but browser-like contexts remain potentially vulnerable.

Mitigation Recommendations

Mozilla has released official fixes for these vulnerabilities in Firefox 153 and Thunderbird 153. Users and administrators should upgrade to these versions or later to mitigate the risks. Since this is not a cloud service, remediation depends on applying these updates. Patch status is confirmed by Mozilla advisories MFSA2026-68 and MFSA2026-71. No additional vendor-recommended mitigations are indicated beyond updating to the fixed versions.
