CVE-2026-16601: CWE-434 Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type in creativemindssolutions CM Map Locations – Visualize and share your locations in a few clicks
The CM Map Locations – Visualize and share your locations in a few clicks plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Limited Arbitrary File Upload in all versions up to, and including, 2.1.8 via the uploadMedia function. This is due to insufficient file type validation in the upload handler, which performs incomplete extension filtering without MIME-type checks or upload capability verification before passing attacker-supplied files to move_uploaded_file(). This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to upload files that may be executable, which makes remote code execution possible. The required nonce is exposed to any logged-in Subscriber via the CMLOC_Editor_Images JavaScript object on the front-end location editor page.

Technical Summary
CVE-2026-16601 is a CWE-434 vulnerability in the CM Map Locations – Visualize and share your locations in a few clicks WordPress plugin. The issue exists in the uploadMedia function, which inadequately validates file types before passing files to move_uploaded_file(), lacking MIME-type checks and upload capability verification. Authenticated attackers with subscriber-level privileges can exploit this to upload arbitrary files, including potentially executable ones, leading to remote code execution. The required nonce for the upload is exposed to all logged-in subscribers via the CMLOC_Editor_Images JavaScript object on the front-end location editor page. No patch or official remediation has been documented yet.
Potential Impact
An attacker with subscriber-level access can upload arbitrary files, including executable ones, potentially leading to remote code execution on the affected system. This compromises confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system running the vulnerable plugin.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict subscriber-level access where possible and monitor for suspicious file uploads. Avoid granting unnecessary upload permissions to low-privilege users.
