Product: Power Systems Firmware

Description

A critical stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability (CWE-121) exists in IBM Power Systems Firmware affecting multiple firmware versions. The flaw resides in the ASMI web interface and allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access to send a malformed request to the Flexible Service Processor (FSP). Successful exploitation results in arbitrary code execution, granting full control over the managed system and impacting confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-16687 is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the ASMI web interface of IBM Power Systems Firmware versions FW1120.00, FW1110.00 through FW1110.30, FW1060.00 through FW1060.80, and FW950.00 through FW950.H2. An unauthenticated attacker with network access can exploit this flaw by sending a specially crafted malformed request to the FSP, leading to arbitrary code execution. This allows the attacker to gain full control over the managed system, resulting in a complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected IBM Power Systems Firmware, leading to full system compromise. This impacts the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the managed system, potentially allowing complete control over the device.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or temporary mitigation has been documented at this time.
