Published: 08/19/2026 (08/19/2026, 19:45:15 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: IBM
Product: PowerVM Hypervisor

Description

CVE-2026-17091 is an integer overflow vulnerability in the IBM PowerVM Hypervisor call interface affecting multiple firmware versions. A root user in a guest partition can exploit this flaw by issuing a crafted hypervisor call to inject arbitrary data into hypervisor or partition memory. This can cause a crash leading to a full platform reboot and termination of all hosted partitions, or memory corruption. The hypervisor restarts automatically, but repeated exploitation may cause sustained availability issues. The vulnerability impacts system integrity and availability.

Technical Analysis

IBM PowerVM Hypervisor versions FW1120.00, FW1110.00 through FW1110.30, FW1060.00 through FW1060.80, and FW950.00 through FW950.H2 contain an integer overflow or wraparound vulnerability (CWE-190) in the hypervisor call interface. An attacker with root privileges on a guest partition can craft a hypervisor call to inject arbitrary amounts of data into hypervisor or partition memory. This leads to either a crash causing a full platform re-initialization (IPL) and termination of all hosted partitions or corruption of memory. The hypervisor automatically restarts, but repeated exploitation can cause ongoing availability degradation. The vulnerability results in integrity and availability impacts to the managed system.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation requires root access on a guest partition and can cause a full platform reboot terminating all hosted partitions or memory corruption within the hypervisor or partitions. This results in integrity and availability impacts. The hypervisor restarts automatically, but repeated exploitation may cause sustained availability issues.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or temporary workaround has been documented at this time.
