CVE-2026-17538: CWE-639 Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key in latepoint Appointment Booking Plugin – LatePoint | Calendar & Scheduling for WordPress
Description
The LatePoint Appointment Booking plugin for WordPress up to version 5.6.9 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability. Authenticated users with Subscriber-level access or higher can modify personal information of arbitrary customers due to insufficient ownership checks in the process_step_customer() function. This flaw allows attackers to change details such as first name, last name, email, phone, and notes. When the contact_merge setting is configured to 'phone', attackers can overwrite the victim's email address and potentially take over the account via password reset.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-17538 is an Insecure Direct Object Reference vulnerability (CWE-639) in the LatePoint Appointment Booking & Reservation plugin for WordPress versions up to and including 5.6.9. The vulnerability arises because the process_step_customer() function only verifies if a user is logged in (is_user_logged_in()) before merging POSTed customer data into an existing customer record, without verifying ownership of the customer data. This allows authenticated users with Subscriber-level privileges or higher to modify personal information of any LatePoint customer. If the plugin's contact_merge setting is set to 'phone', attackers can overwrite the victim's email address, enabling account takeover via password reset.
Potential Impact
Authenticated attackers with low privileges can modify personal information of arbitrary customers, including sensitive fields like email and phone. This can lead to privacy violations and account takeover when the contact_merge setting is 'phone', allowing attackers to reset passwords and assume control of victim accounts. The CVSS score of 5.4 reflects a medium severity impact with confidentiality and integrity impacts but no availability impact.
Mitigation Recommendations
No official patch or fix is currently documented in the provided data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict access to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious activity related to customer data modification. Avoid using the 'phone' setting for contact_merge if possible to reduce risk of account takeover.
