Description

CVE-2026-17675 is a critical out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the ANGLE component of Google Chrome prior to version 151.0.7922.72. This flaw allows a remote attacker who has already compromised the renderer process to potentially escape the sandbox by using a crafted HTML page. The vulnerability has a high CVSS score of 9.6, indicating severe impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. No known exploits in the wild have been reported at this time. Google has released Chrome version 151.0.7922.72 to address this issue.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves an out-of-bounds write in the ANGLE graphics abstraction layer within Google Chrome versions before 151.0.7922.72. Exploitation requires prior compromise of the renderer process and could enable an attacker to perform a sandbox escape, thereby gaining elevated privileges beyond the renderer sandbox. The vulnerability is rated critical with a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.6, reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, user interaction required, scope changed, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The vendor advisory confirms the fix is included in Chrome 151.0.7922.72.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to sandbox escape from the renderer process, allowing an attacker to execute code with higher privileges than normally permitted within the browser sandbox. This can compromise system security by breaking isolation boundaries, potentially leading to full system compromise or further exploitation.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users and administrators should update Google Chrome to version 151.0.7922.72 or later to remediate this vulnerability. Since this is a client-side application vulnerability, applying the official update is the primary and recommended mitigation. No additional vendor advisories indicate alternative mitigations or that no action is required.
