VulnerabilityCVE-2026-18739cvecve-2026-18739
Published: 08/04/2026 (08/04/2026, 05:32:50 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: rpm-software-management
Product: popt

Description

A flaw was found in popt, a command-line option parsing library. An off-by-one error in the poptStuffArgs function, when repeatedly called by a host application or through deep alias nesting, can lead to corruption of internal program data. This corruption could potentially enable a local attacker to execute arbitrary code if the host application then unsafely processes the altered data.

Technical Analysis

An off-by-one error in the poptStuffArgs function of the popt library can cause out-of-bounds write leading to corruption of internal program data. This occurs when the function is called repeatedly or through deep alias nesting. The corrupted data could be exploited by a local attacker to execute arbitrary code if the host application subsequently processes this data unsafely, for example by passing it to exec, system, popen, or dlopen functions. The vulnerability has low impact due to high attack complexity and the requirement for local privileges. Red Hat's advisory confirms the flaw and its low impact but does not state an available patch or remediation level.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause memory corruption resulting in potential arbitrary code execution by a local attacker if the host application unsafely processes corrupted poptContext data. The impact is limited to local attack vectors with high complexity and low availability impact. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported. The flaw could also cause denial of service through crashes or unexpected program states.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix has been confirmed at this time. Users should monitor the vendor advisory for updates. Exploitation requires specific conditions including repeated calls to poptStuffArgs and unsafe processing of corrupted data by the host application. Mitigation involves ensuring host applications handle popt data safely and avoiding deep alias nesting or repeated calls that trigger the flaw. Red Hat advisory does not indicate any automatic or temporary fixes currently available.
