Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a stack-based buffer overflow triggered by improper handling of the Comment argument in the setIpQosRules function of the firewall.so component in TOTOLINK A800R firmware version 4.1.2cu.5137_B20200730. The vulnerable code resides in the CGI script /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi. Exploitation can be performed remotely without user interaction or privileges, allowing attackers to potentially execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.7, indicating high severity. Public exploit code has been released, but no official patch or mitigation has been disclosed by the vendor.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to remote code execution or denial of service on the affected device. Given the remote attack vector and the availability of public exploit code, the risk to affected systems is significant. This could compromise device integrity and network security where the device is deployed.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, it is recommended to restrict access to the device's management interface from untrusted networks and monitor for suspicious activity targeting the vulnerable CGI endpoint. Avoid exposing the device's web management interface to the internet.
