Published: 08/07/2026 (08/07/2026, 16:42:51 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Cisco
Product: Cisco Secure Endpoint

Description

CVE-2026-20348 is a high-severity vulnerability in the XAR file format parser used by ClamAV within Cisco Secure Endpoint. It arises from improper boundary checks during scanning of XAR files, which can lead to memory corruption. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this by submitting a crafted XAR file to cause a denial-of-service (DoS) condition by terminating the ClamAV scanning process. No information about active exploitation or patches is currently available.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a classic buffer overflow in the XAR file format parser of ClamAV integrated into Cisco Secure Endpoint. The flaw is due to insufficient boundary checks on input sizes when scanning XAR files, potentially causing memory corruption. Exploitation requires an attacker to submit a specially crafted file containing XAR content to the scanning engine. Successful exploitation results in termination of the scanning process, causing a denial-of-service condition. The vulnerability affects multiple specific versions of Cisco Secure Endpoint as enumerated. There is no vendor advisory or patch information provided to confirm remediation status.

Potential Impact

The primary impact is a denial-of-service condition on the affected software, caused by termination of the ClamAV scanning process due to memory corruption. There is no confirmed impact on confidentiality or integrity. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a patch or official fix is available, organizations should consider restricting exposure of the scanning service to untrusted inputs and monitor for abnormal termination of the scanning process.
