Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: MediaTek, Inc.
Product: MediaTek chipset

Description

In display, there is a possible out of bounds write due to a missing bounds check. This could lead to local escalation of privilege if a malicious actor has already obtained the System privilege. User interaction is not needed for exploitation. Patch ID: ALPS11004276; Issue ID: MSV-7748.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CWE-787) involves an out-of-bounds write in the display subsystem of MediaTek chipsets due to a missing bounds check. An attacker with existing System privileges could exploit this flaw to escalate privileges locally. No user interaction is required for exploitation. The affected chipsets include MT6991, MT6993, MT8126, MT8171, MT8188, MT8189, MT8367, MT8668, MT8676, MT8678, MT8766, MT8768, MT8781, MT8786, MT8799, and MT8910. There is no vendor advisory or patch information provided, and no known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation could allow a local attacker with System privileges to escalate their privileges further, potentially gaining higher control over the device. Confidentiality and integrity impacts are rated high, while availability is not affected. Since user interaction is not required, the vulnerability could be exploited silently by a privileged local user.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or temporary workaround is currently documented. Until a patch is available, limit access to systems with affected MediaTek chipsets to trusted users with System privileges to reduce risk.
