Description

CVE-2026-20479 is a high-severity vulnerability in MediaTek chipsets involving an out-of-bounds read in the modem component due to a missing bounds check. This flaw can be exploited remotely without user interaction if a user equipment (UE) connects to a rogue base station controlled by an attacker. Exploitation may result in a denial of service condition. No additional execution privileges are required for exploitation. Multiple MediaTek chipset models are affected.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CVE-2026-20479) is an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) in the modem of MediaTek chipsets caused by a missing bounds check. An attacker controlling a rogue base station can trigger this flaw remotely, causing a denial of service on the affected device. The vulnerability does not require user interaction or elevated privileges. The affected chipsets include a range of MediaTek models such as MT2735, MT6833, MT6853, MT6855, MT6873, MT6875, MT6877, MT6880, MT6883, MT6885, MT6889, MT6890, MT6891, MT6893, MT8675, MT8771, MT8791, and MT8797. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 7.5, reflecting high severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and impact limited to availability (denial of service). No official remediation or patch information is provided in the source data.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in a remote denial of service condition on devices using the affected MediaTek chipsets. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, and no privileges or user interaction are required for exploitation. This could disrupt device availability when connecting to a malicious base station.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official patch or remediation level is provided in the available data. Until a patch is available, avoid connecting to untrusted or suspicious base stations to reduce exposure to this vulnerability.
