Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-22555 affects Gitea Open Source Git Server versions before 1.26.0. The vulnerability arises because the API does not enforce the CanCreateOrgRepo permission check when users fork repositories into organizations. This improper access control flaw (CWE-284) can result in unauthorized users creating forks within organizations, potentially exposing sensitive organizational secrets. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 8.1, reflecting high impact on confidentiality and integrity with network attack vector and low attack complexity.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an API user with limited privileges to fork repositories into organizations without passing the required permission check. This can lead to unauthorized access to organization secrets, compromising confidentiality and integrity. There is no indication of availability impact. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation level is currently confirmed. Users should upgrade to Gitea version 1.26.0 or later once available, as the vulnerability is fixed in that version. Until then, restrict API access to trusted users and monitor for unusual repository forking activity. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance.
