Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-24118 is a critical sandbox breakout vulnerability in the vm2 Node.js sandbox prior to version 3.11.0. It stems from improper control of code generation (CWE-94), allowing attackers to inject and execute arbitrary code outside the sandbox environment on the host system. This vulnerability enables full compromise of the host via code execution. The issue was fixed in vm2 version 3.11.0.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the host system by escaping the vm2 sandbox. This leads to full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact on the host environment running the vulnerable vm2 versions.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade vm2 to version 3.11.0 or later, where this vulnerability has been patched. No other mitigation is indicated or required as the fix is available in the official release.
