Technical Analysis
The vulnerability in BlueSpice's BlueSpiceUserManager extension arises because the REST endpoints /bs-usermanager/v1/block/create and /bs-usermanager/v1/block/delete invoke UserManager::blockUser() and UserManager::unblockUser() without verifying the acting user's permissions. This missing authorization (CWE-862) allows any authenticated user to block or unblock arbitrary accounts, including administrators. The affected versions are >=5.0.0 <5.1.11 and >=5.2.0 <5.2.7.
Potential Impact
An attacker with any authenticated user privileges can block administrator accounts, causing denial of service by locking out administrators. They can also unblock accounts blocked by administrators, potentially bypassing administrative restrictions. This compromises account management integrity and availability of administrative functions.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict authenticated user access to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious account blocking/unblocking activity. Do not rely on the BlueSpiceUserManager extension's block/unblock functionality without additional access controls.
