Technical Analysis

In Mbed TLS versions >=3.5.0 <3.6.7 and >=4.0.0 <4.1.2, the TLS 1.3 client improperly accepts a HelloRetryRequest message that selects a cryptographic group not originally advertised by the client. This behavior is a violation of the TLS 1.3 protocol specification and is categorized as CWE-669 (Incorrect Resource Transfer Between Spheres). The flaw could lead to limited impact on the integrity of the TLS handshake process.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability does not affect confidentiality or availability but has a low impact on integrity, as indicated by the CVSS vector (C:N/I:L/A:N). There are no known exploits in the wild. The issue could potentially allow an attacker to influence the TLS handshake by selecting an unadvertised group, but the overall risk is low.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Mbed TLS versions 3.6.7 and 4.1.2 and later. Users should upgrade to these versions or later to remediate the vulnerability. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
