What to do

AI-suggested

  1. Monitor official owntone-server repositories and security advisories for patches addressing CVE-2026-26829 and apply updates promptly once available.
  2. Implement network-level protections such as Web Application Firewalls (WAFs) or Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) to detect and block suspicious HTTP request patterns that could trigger the NULL pointer dereference.
  3. Restrict access to the owntone-server to trusted networks or VPNs to reduce exposure to untrusted external actors.
  4. Enable detailed logging and monitoring of HTTP requests to identify anomalous or repeated malformed requests indicative of exploitation attempts.
  5. Conduct regular security assessments and fuzz testing on the owntone-server deployment to identify and remediate similar input validation issues proactively.
  6. Consider deploying rate limiting on HTTP requests to mitigate the risk of DoS attacks leveraging this vulnerability.
  7. Educate system administrators and security teams about this vulnerability to ensure rapid detection and response to potential exploitation attempts.

Description

A NULL pointer dereference in the safe_atou64 function (src/misc.c) of owntone-server through commit c4d57aa allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via sending a series of crafted HTTP requests to the server.
