Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in Grafana Tempo 2.6.1 involves a TraceQL query that includes a large exemplars hint value. When processed, the Tempo instance allocates an excessive amount of memory, which can cause the service to crash due to out-of-memory conditions. The issue requires authenticated user access and results in denial of service (DoS) without impacting confidentiality or integrity.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user can exploit this vulnerability to cause the Grafana Tempo service to crash by triggering an out-of-memory condition. This results in denial of service, potentially disrupting monitoring and tracing capabilities dependent on Tempo. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or temporary workaround has been documented at this time. Monitoring for vendor updates and restricting authenticated user permissions to trusted individuals is advised until a patch is available.
