Published: Fri Apr 17 2026 (04/17/2026, 18:38:58 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: FirebirdSQL
Product: firebird

Description

Firebird is an open-source relational database management system. In versions prior to 5.0.4, 4.0.7 and 3.0.14, when the server receives an op_crypt_key_callback packet without prior authentication, the port_server_crypt_callback handler is not initialized, resulting in a null pointer dereference and server crash. An unauthenticated attacker who knows only the server's IP and port can exploit this to crash the server. This issue has been fixed in versions 5.0.4, 4.0.7 and 3.0.14.

Technical Analysis

FirebirdSQL firebird versions before 3.0.14, 4.0.7, and 5.0.4 contain a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability (CWE-476) in the port_server_crypt_callback handler. This occurs when the server processes an op_crypt_key_callback packet without prior authentication, leading to the handler not being initialized and resulting in a server crash. The vulnerability allows unauthenticated remote attackers to cause a denial of service by crashing the server. The vulnerability is addressed in Firebird versions 3.0.14, 4.0.7, and 5.0.4.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to cause a denial of service by crashing the FirebirdSQL server remotely. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported. The CVSS score is 8.2 (high), reflecting the ease of exploitation and the impact on availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability has been fixed in FirebirdSQL versions 3.0.14, 4.0.7, and 5.0.4. Users should upgrade to these or later versions to remediate the issue. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor's versioning information. No other mitigation steps are indicated.
