Technical Analysis

Emocheck insecurely loads DLLs from its execution directory without proper path validation or control. An attacker with the ability to place a malicious DLL file in the same directory as Emocheck can cause the tool to load this DLL, resulting in arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the user running Emocheck. This vulnerability affects all versions of Emocheck and has a CVSS 3.0 base score of 7.8, indicating high severity. The vulnerability is local (AV:L), requires low attack complexity (AC:L), no privileges (PR:N), but user interaction (UI:R). The impact includes high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts. No official patch or vendor advisory detailing remediation is currently available.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running Emocheck. This can lead to full compromise of the affected system's confidentiality, integrity, and availability at the user level. The vulnerability requires local access and user interaction, limiting remote exploitation. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, users should avoid running Emocheck in directories where untrusted DLLs could be placed. Running Emocheck with least privilege and in controlled environments may reduce risk. Monitor official JPCERT/CC communications for updates and patches.
