AI-suggested

A fix is available in phpBB version 3.3.16 and later. Users should upgrade to version 3.3.16 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. Until patched, ensure that the force_server_vars setting is enabled to prevent the server from relying on the HTTP Host header for generating password reset URLs. Additionally, validate and restrict Host header values at the webserver level to prevent manipulation.

Description

phpBB versions before 3.3.16 have a vulnerability in their password recovery mechanism due to Host Header Injection. This flaw allows an attacker who can manipulate the HTTP Host header to poison password reset links sent via email. The vulnerability arises when the force_server_vars setting is disabled, causing the server to use the Host header to generate reset URLs. Exploiting this can lead to password reset emails containing links to attacker-controlled domains, potentially enabling account takeover.
