This vulnerability has been fixed in the Linux kernel. Users and administrators should update to a kernel version that includes the fix identified by the provided commit hashes. Since this is not a cloud service, manual patching is required. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the official fix.
Description
CVE-2026-31449 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ext4 filesystem code. The flaw occurs in the ext4_ext_correct_indexes() function, which does not properly validate index pointer bounds before accessing them. This can lead to a slab-out-of-bounds read if the on-disk extent header is corrupted or maliciously crafted. The issue has been fixed by adding validation checks that return an error when index pointers are out of range.
