A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The Ubuntu security advisory USN-8488-1 provides updates that address this and other kernel vulnerabilities. Users should update their systems to the fixed kernel versions to mitigate this issue.
Description
A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's OCFS2 filesystem was fixed. The flaw occurred in the ocfs2_fault() function when the VM_FAULT_RETRY flag caused the mmap_lock to be dropped, allowing a concurrent munmap() to free a vm_area_struct. This led to a dangling pointer dereference in trace_ocfs2_fault(). The fix involves saving a block number before the lock drop to avoid referencing freed memory. Multiple specific Linux kernel versions are affected. A patch is available, and no known exploits are reported in the wild.
