A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The fix reorganizes the vfio/xe initialization code to prevent the crash. Refer to the vendor security notices for updated kernel packages. No additional mitigation is required once patched.
Description
CVE-2026-31601 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's vfio/xe driver where attempting to reset virtual function (VF) devices that do not support migration causes a kernel page fault and system crash. This occurs because some internal structures needed for reset handling are only initialized during migration initialization, which is not performed for these devices. The issue has been fixed by reorganizing the initialization code to separate migration initialization from reset initialization.
