AI-suggested
A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The fix clamps the maximum shift value in the s32ton() function to prevent out-of-bounds shifts. Users should update to the fixed kernel versions as per vendor advisories such as the Ubuntu security notice USN-8488-1. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's HID subsystem was resolved by clamping the report_size value in the s32ton() function to prevent undefined shift operations. The issue arises because s32ton() shifts by n-1 where n is the field's report_size, which can be up to 256 as bounded by the HID parser. This can cause out-of-bounds shifts on 32-bit types when processing malformed HID reports. The fix applies a clamp to the maximum shift value, similar to a prior fix for a related function snto32().
