AI-suggested
A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions to remediate this vulnerability. The fix adds necessary bounds checks before alignment padding writes in smb2_get_ea(). Users should update to patched kernel versions as provided by their Linux distribution vendors. No additional mitigations are specified or required beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A high severity out-of-bounds write vulnerability (CVE-2026-31705) in the Linux kernel's ksmbd SMB server component was fixed. The flaw occurs in the smb2_get_ea() function where alignment padding is applied unconditionally after writing each Extended Attribute (EA) entry, potentially writing 1-3 bytes beyond the allocated buffer boundary. This can lead to kernel heap memory corruption when compound SMB requests share a response buffer with tight remaining space. The issue affects multiple Linux kernel versions and has been addressed by adding proper bounds checks before the alignment memset operation.
