AI-suggested

This vulnerability has been fixed in the Linux kernel. Users and administrators should apply the official kernel updates that include the fix identified by the listed commit hashes. Since this is a kernel vulnerability, patching the kernel to a fixed version is the recommended and effective mitigation. No additional workarounds or mitigations are indicated.

Description

CVE-2026-31708 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's SMB client implementation. It involves an out-of-bounds (OOB) read in the smb2_ioctl_query_info QUERY_INFO path. A malicious SMB server can exploit this flaw by returning a larger OutputBufferLength than the actual response, causing the kernel to copy more data than intended and potentially exposing adjacent kernel heap memory to userspace. The issue is fixed by adding proper bounds checking on the copied buffer to prevent overflow.
