AI-suggested

A fix is available in multiple Linux kernel commits following version 5.12. Users should update to a fixed kernel version containing these patches. If SMB client functionality is not required, the cifs kernel module can be disabled by blacklisting it via a modprobe configuration file and regenerating the initramfs, followed by a reboot. Disabling cifs will prevent mounting SMB/CIFS shares, so this should only be done if SMB access is not needed.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel SMB client (cifsacl) allows a malicious SMB server to provide a malformed Discretionary Access Control List (DACL) that claims more Access Control Entries (ACEs) than present. This insufficient validation can cause the kernel to read or copy beyond intended memory boundaries, leading to memory corruption. The flaw has been fixed by improving DACL validation to ensure structural integrity before rewriting. Disabling the cifs kernel module can mitigate the issue if SMB client functionality is not needed.
