Technical Analysis

This vulnerability allows a user with Editor-level privileges and write access to a Grafana dashboard to overwrite dashboards they do not own, thereby escalating their privileges to admin on those dashboards. The issue is classified under CWE-284 (Improper Access Control). The CVSS 3.1 score is 7.1, indicating high severity, with network attack vector, low attack complexity, and no user interaction required. The vulnerability affects multiple versions of Grafana OSS, including 8.5.0, 11.6.14, 12.0.0, 12.2.8, 12.3.0, 12.3.6, 12.4.0, 12.4.3, 13.0.0, and 13.0.1. There is no vendor advisory or patch information available at this time, and no known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Potential Impact

An attacker with Editor privileges and write access to a dashboard can escalate their privileges to admin on that specific dashboard by overwriting it. This could allow unauthorized administrative control over dashboard configurations, potentially leading to unauthorized changes or data exposure within the affected Grafana instance. The impact is limited to dashboards where the attacker already has write access, and does not affect the entire Grafana system or other dashboards without such access.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict write access to dashboards to trusted users only to minimize risk. Monitor Grafana user permissions carefully and consider limiting Editor roles or write permissions where possible.
