Description

CVE-2026-37225 is a vulnerability in FlexRIC v2.0.0 where the iApp process crashes when it receives an E42_RIC_SUBSCRIPTION_REQUEST containing an empty ricEventTriggerDefinition field. This occurs due to a mismatch in validation between the E42 layer decoder, which accepts the empty field as valid, and the E2AP encoder, which requires it to be non-empty. A remote unauthenticated attacker can exploit this to cause a denial of service by crashing the iApp process via SIGABRT. The vulnerability has a high severity with a CVSS score of 7.5 and is categorized under CWE-617 (Reachable Assertion). No patch or official remediation guidance is currently available.

Technical Analysis

FlexRIC v2.0.0 contains a vulnerability where the iApp process (listening on port 36422) crashes upon receiving an E42_RIC_SUBSCRIPTION_REQUEST message with an empty ricEventTriggerDefinition field. The E42 layer decoder accepts this empty field as valid input, but the E2AP encoder asserts that this field must be non-empty, causing an assertion failure and process termination (SIGABRT). This cross-layer validation mismatch can be triggered remotely without authentication, leading to a denial of service condition. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-37225 with a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H). There are no known exploits in the wild and no vendor patch or official remediation has been documented yet.

Potential Impact

A remote unauthenticated attacker can cause the FlexRIC iApp process to crash, resulting in a denial of service. The crash occurs due to an assertion failure triggered by a malformed E42_RIC_SUBSCRIPTION_REQUEST message with an empty ricEventTriggerDefinition field. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported, only availability is affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, consider implementing network-level protections such as filtering or rate limiting traffic to port 36422 to reduce exposure. Monitor for unusual crashes of the iApp process and restart services as needed.
