Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves improper neutralization of special elements in SQL commands (CWE-89) within the CosmosDBVectorStore of Spring AI. Attackers can exploit this by submitting specially crafted document IDs that manipulate SQL queries, potentially leading to unauthorized data access or modification. Affected versions include Spring AI 1.0.0 to 1.0.5 and 1.1.0 to 1.1.4. The issue is resolved in versions 1.0.6 and 1.1.5. The CVSS 3.1 vector indicates network attack vector, low attack complexity, requiring low privileges and no user interaction, with high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary SQL commands on the backend database, leading to full compromise of data confidentiality, integrity, and availability within the affected Spring AI deployments. This could result in unauthorized data disclosure, data manipulation, or denial of service conditions.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade affected Spring AI instances to version 1.0.6 or later, or 1.1.5 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Since no official vendor advisory or patch link is provided, verify the upgrade through official Spring AI release notes or vendor channels. Patch status is not yet confirmed by an official advisory, so consult vendor resources for the latest remediation guidance. Until patched, restrict access to the affected components and validate or sanitize document IDs to reduce risk.
