Vendor/Project: beetbox
Product: beets

Description

Beets, a media library management system, had a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in its bundled web UI prior to version 2.10.0. The issue arose because the web UI used Underscore template interpolation mode <%= ... %> for untrusted metadata fields, which inserts raw content without HTML escaping. This allowed attacker-controlled markup to become active in the DOM. The vulnerability has been patched in version 2.10.0. The CVSS 4.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-42052 is a cross-site scripting vulnerability in the beetbox beets media library management system. Before version 2.10.0, the bundled web UI used Underscore's <%= ... %> interpolation for untrusted metadata fields, which performs raw insertion without HTML escaping. Since the rendered output is inserted using .html(...), attacker-controlled markup can execute in the DOM. This vulnerability was addressed and fixed in beets version 2.10.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can inject malicious scripts into the web UI by exploiting improper neutralization of input, potentially leading to script execution in the context of the victim's browser. This can result in actions such as session hijacking or other client-side attacks. The vulnerability requires user interaction and no privileges, with medium complexity to exploit.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade beets to version 2.10.0 or later, where this vulnerability has been patched. No other official remediation or temporary fixes are indicated. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory stating the issue is fixed in version 2.10.0.
