Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-42174 is a missing authorization vulnerability (CWE-862) in the Kirby content management system. Specifically, in versions before 4.9.0 and between 5.0.0 and 5.4.0, the operations related to user avatar management (creation, replacement, deletion) are not gated by the required user update permissions. This flaw permits users with limited privileges to modify avatars without proper authorization controls. The vulnerability has been addressed in Kirby versions 4.9.0 and 5.4.0.

Potential Impact

Users with limited privileges can modify user avatars without proper authorization, potentially leading to unauthorized changes in user profile representations. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.3 (medium severity), indicating a moderate impact due to the lack of required authorization checks on avatar management functions. There is no indication of known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Kirby to version 4.9.0 or later in the 4.x series, or to version 5.4.0 or later in the 5.x series, where this authorization issue has been patched. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor's versioning information. No additional mitigation is indicated.
