A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions to enforce local MITM requirements correctly during Bluetooth SMP pairing. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms that this issue is fixed in updated kernel releases. Users should update to the patched kernel versions as provided by their Linux distribution vendors.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel Bluetooth subsystem related to Secure Simple Pairing (SMP) was resolved. The issue involved the pairing response being built from the initiator's authentication request before enforcing local Man-In-The-Middle (MITM) protection requirements. This could cause the responder to omit MITM protection even when it was locally required, leading to inconsistent method selection during pairing. The flaw was fixed by verifying MITM capability from IO capabilities and forcing MITM requirements in the pairing response when high security is needed.
