A patch is available and should be applied to affected linux-aws kernel versions to ensure 'permuted_state' is zeroized properly. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms that this and other Linux kernel vulnerabilities have been fixed. Users should update to the fixed kernel versions as per their distribution's security notices. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's cryptographic library (lib/crypto) involving the ChaCha cipher was resolved by zeroizing the 'permuted_state' variable before it leaves scope. Because the ChaCha permutation is invertible, the 'permuted_state' could be used to recover the original state and thus the key if not properly cleared. This fix improves the handling of sensitive cryptographic data in memory. The vulnerability affects specific linux-aws kernel versions. A patch is available to address this issue.
