AI-suggested
A patch is available and should be applied promptly. The Ubuntu security advisory USN-8566-1 confirms that this vulnerability has been fixed in updated Linux kernel packages. Users should update to the fixed kernel versions provided by their distribution. No additional mitigations are indicated beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ksmbd component related to improper validation of inherited Access Control Entry (ACE) Security Identifier (SID) length has been resolved. The flaw allowed malformed inheritable ACEs to specify more subauthorities than present, potentially causing out-of-bounds reads and buffer pointer miscalculations during SID inheritance. This could lead to privilege escalation or system compromise. The issue is fixed by validating SID counts and lengths before use and rejecting malformed inherited DACLs. Multiple Linux kernel versions are affected, and patches are available.
