Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10

Description

CVE-2026-43958 is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in rrdcached, a component of rrdtool on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. A local attacker with access to the rrdcached socket can send an oversized CREATE request to trigger this flaw. Exploitation may cause the daemon to crash, resulting in denial of service, or potentially allow arbitrary code execution, affecting data integrity and confidentiality. The vulnerability has a high severity with a CVSS score of 7. 8. No official patch or remediation level is currently indicated in the vendor advisory. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a stack-based buffer overflow in the rrdcached daemon of rrdtool on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. An attacker with local access to the rrdcached socket can exploit this by sending an oversized CREATE request, which may lead to denial of service or arbitrary code execution. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.8, reflecting high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The vendor advisory does not specify an available patch or remediation status as of the published date.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can cause the rrdcached daemon to crash, resulting in denial of service. Additionally, it may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code locally, compromising system integrity and confidentiality of data handled by rrdcached. There are no reports of known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-43958 for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict local access to the rrdcached socket to trusted users only to reduce risk of exploitation.
