VulnerabilityCVE-2026-44001cvecve-2026-44001cwe-248
Published: 05/13/2026 (05/13/2026, 17:29:00 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: patriksimek
Product: vm2

Description

vm2 is an open source vm/sandbox for Node.js. Prior to 3.11.0, a sandbox escape vulnerability in vm2 v3.10.5 allows any sandboxed code to crash the host Node.js process via a single Promise constructor that triggers an unhandled rejection propagating to the host. The fix for CVE-2026-22709 (v3.10.2) only sanitized the onRejected callback in .then() and .catch() overrides and did not address the executor-to-unhandledRejection path. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.11.0.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-44001 describes a sandbox escape vulnerability in the vm2 Node.js sandbox library versions before 3.11.0. Specifically, sandboxed code can cause the host Node.js process to crash by triggering an unhandled Promise rejection through a single Promise constructor. The prior fix for CVE-2026-22709 addressed only the onRejected callback sanitization in .then() and .catch() overrides but did not mitigate the executor-to-unhandledRejection path. This vulnerability allows denial of service by crashing the host process and is resolved in vm2 version 3.11.0.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows any code running inside the vm2 sandbox to crash the host Node.js process, resulting in a denial of service. There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity impact. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 8.6 (high), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and a scope change with high impact on availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade vm2 to version 3.11.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory.
