Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-44006 affects the patriksimek vm2 Node.js sandbox prior to version 3.11.0. The vulnerability allows attackers to reach BaseHandler.getPrototypeOf, which can be exploited to obtain arbitrary prototypes, leading to improper control of code generation (code injection). This can result in full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system. The vulnerability is resolved in vm2 version 3.11.0. The Red Hat advisory linked confirms the vulnerability but does not explicitly state patch availability or remediation level.

Potential Impact

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability remotely without authentication or user interaction to execute arbitrary code within the vm2 sandbox environment. This leads to a complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system using the vulnerable vm2 versions prior to 3.11.0.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in vm2 version 3.11.0. Users should upgrade to version 3.11.0 or later to remediate this vulnerability. The Red Hat advisory does not explicitly state patch availability or remediation level, so users should verify the vendor advisory for the latest remediation guidance.
